Attend a multi-day institute on learning to use educational technology for formative assessment

Old Orchard Beach High School is proud to host Neil and Cristina Heffernan, faculty from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, to present this workshop on ASSISTments. Professor Neil Heffernan began building and piloting this web-based tool in 2003 with funding from the US Department of Education. This event is part of an Bill and Melinda Gates Next Generation Learning Challenge Grant, you are invited to join in. ASSISTments is free to use. It is used by hundreds of teachers and is linked to the Common Core Standards.
Note for school leaders
- Principals and other school leaders are invited to join the institute for the final two hours to hear presentation of the participants work. This will facilitate cooperation between teachers and school leadership on the activities developed in the institute.

Cost and Equipment
Come to the two day workshop in the summer! We will have a pull out session for teachers completely new to the system but it is very appropriate for anyone who has done ASSISTments for a while.
- The cost for two days summer days is $200.
Each participant is expected to bring a laptop, power strips will be provided for charging.

What will be covered in the three days?
The ASSISTments Platform is a web-based system by which teachers can freely make accounts, write or select questions and create assistance for students who get the questions incorrect. Teacher and students get instant reports detailing the responses for each item. These reports can then be used to inform instruction. These reports are aligned directly to the Common Core Standards. ASSISTments is merely a tool, in this workshop you will learn how to use this tool and prepare materials for your class that will allow you and your students to engage with the data the instant it is in, no waiting for papers to be graded. You will learn to build your own content but you will also have access to the thousands of questions already in the system for 4th to 10th grade math. Since the system is a tool it is used in a variety of ways. You will hear stories from many different schools and begin to design your own story.
Objectives
The participant will be able to:
- Create classes, assignments and be ready to enroll students.
- Create a curriculum of problem sets to assess your instructional objectives.
- Create a simple plan for using ASSISTments in the spring.
- Carry out a simple plan using ASSISTments for the spring.
- Use the “quick builder” and the editor to make ASSISTments. Including uploading an image.
- Utilize, Parent Notification, Open Response Critique, Data Driven rules and ARRS.
- Track assessment of Common Core Standards.
- Organize curriculum in the “School Folder.”
- Develop a routine that is sustainable and will foster formative assessment.
- Learn how to share ASSISTments and problem sets with the community.
