Schedule for Monthly Mentoring
- October (10/21/09) Cartesian Graph activity with Christine
For this class, we turned the classroom floor into a coordinate grid and had the students plot points and lines with different colored yarn. My role was to visit with each group and help them with their construction, as well as ask them questions about their interpretation of what they were doing. We then had a discussion about slope, using the grid and a ski slope metaphor to help introduce students to the material.
- November (11/18/09) Bridge Experiment with Christine
Students did an experiment out of their book where they constructed bridges of varying thickness out of sheets of paper and tested how many pennies they could hold. They then recorded their data, graphed it and interpreted it. My role was to visit with the groups and help them with their experiment, ask them questions about how they interpreted their data, etc. Afterward I led a class talk about interpreting the results. Talked extensively about the scientific method, variance, and experiments, all while connecting it with my work at WPI.
- December (12/14/09) Essay Critiquing with Christine
We had students critique each other's open responses to a linear equation word problem using the new Essay Critiquing feature of ASSISTment. I then led a discussion of their critiques. See exemplary teaching report for more information
- January (1/26/10) Essay Critiquing with Courtney
