Burncoat Middle School is one of the initial pilot schools for ASSISTments starting in 2003. This year along with teachers using ASSISTments for nightly homework they will also have a Numeracy Computer Lab where students will work for a period each week on ASSISTments with an experienced math teacher.

Initiatives

Numeracy ASSISTments Lab

All 600 studetns in the school will work on ASSISTments once a week.

Their routine will consist of 3 activities online.

  1. Do a short 5 problem Diagnostic Problem Set. This will be a benchmark assessment for all the 7th and the 8th grade math teachers since all of their students will be taking the same problem set each week. Click here to see the assignments selected for these diagnostic sets.
  2. Catch up on their Skill Building. Each student will be assigned a set number of Skill Building Problem sets to complete. Then each week they will take a reassessment test that is automatically generated by the ASSISTment's ARRS (Automatic Reassessment and Retraining System). This will be an individualized reassessment each 7, 14, 30 and 60 days. If a student does not pass the reassessment test they will have to do some retraining on that skill.
  3. Online Enrichment. Students who have finished the two previous assignments will do an ASSISTment problem set that points them to an enrichment website. Once they are done looking at the website they will take a quiz to see how well they understood the topic covered.

Nightly Homework

Burncoat honors students in Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 will do their homework online. Student use their books to access the questions and the ASSISTments system to get immediate feedback on their answers. Their teachers then know before students come to class which problems were hard and which were easy.
