Ida Case 2
From TeacherWiki
Overview:
- Have students do a quick problem set and immediately print out the item report.
- Call students over one at a time to review their work on the problem set, calling the ones who had the most trouble first.
Idea
Sometimes in the ASSISTment lab I give the students a quick quiz first thing. Today they did the quiz from Variables and Patterns Investigation 1. We have just started this unit and this was the first formative assessment I have given them. Since they all finished in the first 15 minutes of class I was able to quickly print out the item report to see how they did.
Now I wanted to address those students who got problems wrong. While everyone else worked on the next problem set I called students over to my desk where I had a copy of the Quiz and the newly printed item report. I then went over each question with the students, asking them why they responded the way they did and had them explain the correct response. There were only 5 problems and they were all very conceptual so the discussions went quickly and each student then called up the next student.
Conclusion
The ASSISTments lab allows me to have time to meet independently with my students while everyone else is practicing problems solving and getting help from the system. This allows me to do some valuable differentiated instruction.
