Jack Rafferty’s 8th grade class.

Overview:
- Assign a large problem-set to be done at home over a month long period. Show the students how to show their work.
- Encourage students to work on the project by showing them that I have records on the computer that show what they have been doing.
- Use the results from their work to write a written test that they will take at home in January.
- Give the students the final take home exam and grade their projects.
Day 1
Today I started my big take home computer project. I have asked my students to log onto the ASSISTments at home and do the 7th grade easy and de-comps problem set. This is part of a larger project that has 3 components. The percent grades I have for each part of the project are in figure 1. For this project I expect the students to do all 175 problems on the computer for 30% of their grade. I have given them over a month to do this, which includes the winter holiday break. They also have to show their work on paper for each of the problems on the computer, this is worth 20% of their grade. Over the winter holiday I plan to look at their work and find a selection of problems in which less than 50% of the students did them correctly and give them as a written take home test. This test will also include problems from my warm ups that I give at the beginning of each class.
| 1. Completion of Assistments Problem set #3, "7th Grade Easy and Decomps" | 30% |
| 2. Completion of written project | 20% |
| 3. Completion of written test | 50% |

Day 2
I gave out the assignment a few weeks ago and it is almost time for the winter holiday. On the days I go to the computer lab, I have been showing my students their progress on the 7th grade easy and de-comps problem set. Some of them are a bit surprised to see that I can tell exactly what they have been up to. Most of my students have been able to find a time at home to get their work done. I have told them that if they really cannot get to the computer at home their parent or guardian has to come in to school to discuss this with me.
As they work on the assignment they have been showing their work so I can collect that part of the project. Figure 2 is an example of one of my students' work. She has to put the ASSISTment number down so I know which problem she is working on. This assignment is given in random order so everyone’s work looks a little different.
Day 3
It is the first day back from the winter holiday break. I have composed the written test. There were 20 problems that I chose to put on the test. I picked ones that more than 50% of the students got wrong. Today is Wednesday, so I am giving the students one week to finish their work.
Day 4
Today is Tuesday and I handed out the tests. Everyone will take it home for 3 days and turn it in on Friday.
